HOUSTON, TX – An exceptional night of Quarter Horse racing took place Saturday, June 3 at Sam Houston Race Park, highlighted by the final of the $461,835 Sam Houston Futurity (G2). Two features were also contested honoring John Buchanan and Leon Bard, who were involved in Quarter Horse racing prior to the passage of pari-mutuel racing in Texas and prominent at Sam Houston Race Park when the track opened in 1994 until their passing. Many breeders, owners, trainers, and jockeys were in attendance and shared memories with the Buchanan and Bard family members.

HOUSTON, TX –Sam Houston Race Park hosted the final of the richest race of the 2023 Quarter Horse meet, the $461,835 Sam Houston Futurity (G2) on Saturday, June 3. For the past two years, Juan Diaz, Jr. has trained the winner of the prestigious championship for 2-year-olds, and with four qualifiers, the odds were pretty good that he could win his third.

HOUSTON, TX – An outstanding night of Quarter Horse racing is set for Saturday, June 3 at Sam Houston Race Park with four stakes, highlighted by the $461,835 Sam Houston Futurity (G2). The $51,535 Sam Houston Juvenile will also be contested along with two features named in honor of prominent Texas horsemen John Buchanan and Leon Bard.

Bryan Pettigrew named Vice President and General Manager of Texas Racing Operations for PENN Entertainment
(Houston, TX – May 23, 2023) – Horse racing industry veteran Bryan Pettigrew will be returning to Texas to lead PENN Entertainment’s horse racing operations at Sam Houston Race Park in Houston and at Retama Park in Selma. Pettigrew was previously head of marketing at Sam Houston Race Park in the mid-1990s before joining the National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) and later the Breeders’ Cup in Lexington, KY where he was the Chief Marketing Officer before departing in 2019.
