HOUSTON, TX- While college basketball might take center stage in the month of March, Texas Champions Day at Sam Houston Race Park certainly provided its share of excitement, emotion and rewarding finishes for both Thoroughbreds and their connections. Seven stakes were contested with plenty of highlights throughout the afternoon card. <meta charset="UTF-8" />Jockey Gerardo Mora began his career as an apprentice 13 years ago in Texas and returned for the 2024 Sam Houston Race Park Thoroughbred racing season on January 5, just three wins shy of his 1,000th milestone. As fate would have it, he came close in Houston, but the win finally came on opening day at Will Rogers Downs!

HOUSTON, TX- Sam Houston Race Park hosted Texas Preview Day with five stakes saluting Texas Thoroughbreds. The annual event serves as a preview for Texas Champions Day, which will take place on Saturday, March 23 and the majority of today’s winners are expected to point to one of the stakes saluting Texas-breds. Fortunately, there was no rain, but temperatures were in the 40’s with wind gusts up to 28 mph throughout the card. Nevertheless, the Thoroughbreds were undaunted and produced some very entertaining finishes!
FIVE TEXAS PREVIEW DAY STAKES WILL BE CONTESTED ON SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 17 AT SAM HOUSTON RACE PARK
First Post is 1:00 pm (Central) for the Ten-Race Program
HOUSTON, TX- Sam Houston Race Park will present Texas Preview Day on Saturday, February 17 featuring stakes on both the main track and Connally Turf Course. The ten-race card begins at 1:00 pm (CT) with several Texas Thoroughbred Association (TTA) champions and rising stars competing in the $75,000 Two Altazano, $75,000 Houston Turf, $75,000 Jim’s Orbit, $75,000 David E. Hooper and $75,000 Miss Bluebonnet Turf.
