SAM HOUSTON RACE PARK ANNOUNCES 2020 LIVE RACING AND PROMOTIONAL CALENDAR
THIS YEAR – HORSE RACING WITH A MAJOR BOOST IN PURSES, MORE DOG RACES & THE RETURN OF MIDGET WRESTLING!!
HOUSTON, TX— Sam Houston Race Park (www.shrp.com) prepares to kick off its 26th Season of Live Racing with the opening of the 2020 Thoroughbred Meet on January 10th. The Thoroughbred Meet will consist of 39 live racing days spanning from January 10th to March 28th. The Thoroughbred Meet has been extended by seven additional days of racing with a whole new purse structure after the passing of House Bill 2463. Purses have been increased on average by more than 80 percent over last year’s levels. SHRP will also host the richest day of racing in Texas with the Houston Racing Festival on Sunday, January 26th.
With a special 1pm post time & over $1 Million in Purses, the Houston Racing Festival will feature six stakes races including the $300,000 Houston Ladies Classic (GIII), the $200,000 John B. Connally Turf Cup (GIII), the newly added $200,000 Texas Turf Mile for 3-year-olds, the $100,000 Frontier Utilities Turf Sprint, the $75,000 Jersey Lilly Turf, and the $75,000 Stonerside Sprint. For the second consecutive year, the track has also announced a special promotion for the Sunday of the HRF. Along with free admission to the public for the Houston Racing Festival, one lucky fan will win $10,000 in cash! All guests in attendance will be eligible to enter into a special drawing for the $10,000 cash prize.
The fan favorite, Camel & Ostrich Racing will be held two consecutive nights on March 6th & 7th. New this year, taking the place of Texas Stallions Day- will be Texas Champions Preview Day which will feature over $300,000 in purses and be held on February 22nd! Texas Champions Day, where the best Texas-bred horses duke it out, continues as a one-night event on Saturday, March 21st, with 7 stakes races and over $500,000 in purses.
During the American Quarter Horse Meet, which begins on April 10th and runs until May 30th, SHRP will conduct live racing on both Kentucky Derby Day and Preakness Stakes Day. Both days will have special 1pm post-times. During these events, fans will be able to watch & wager on live Quarter Horse racing, and also watch & wager on all the races from Churchill Downs and Pimlico Race Course, respectively. Kentucky Derby Day this year is May 2nd and The Preakness Stakes is May 16th. Fans are encouraged to participate in the $500 Derby Hat Contest held during Kentucky Derby Day.
Also new this year—in addition to the always popular Wiener Dog Races which return for their 13th consecutive year on May 30th, and Corgi Races returning for their 3rd year on March 14th. Sam Houston Race Park is excited to announce an additional four “Dog Racing Days”!
Numerous different breeds will take the track and compete for a cash prize! This year the added dog breeds are as follows:
-February 15th: Australian Shepherds (Aussie) Races
-February 29th: Yorkie Races
-March 28th: Pugs & Mini Poodle Races
April 25th marks the return of Midget Wrestling, also that same night we have Chihuahua Races, so mark your calendars!

Dollar Day returns after a one year hiatus—come out on February 1st to enjoy $1 Draft Beer, Hot Dogs and Soda! The following weekend on February 8th, Sam Houston Race Park will be hosting “70’s Night” with disco dance and best dressed competitions!
As always, every Friday night at Sam Houston Race Park will feature 50-cent draft beer from 6-9pm.
15 minutes earlier than in year’s past, the first post-time for all Friday and Saturday night racing will be at 6:45pm. Live gates will be 90 minutes prior to first post on all racing days.
